Intensive Immersion: Family Offices & Self-Reliance

This program has been designed to delve more deeply into the complexities and nuances of family offices, balancing personal goals with those of the family office, and the role of individuals within the family office.

The proposed structure provides a framework for delivering the information over a 5 day program. The actual duration, content depth and specific activities can be adjusted based on the needs and availability of the members of the family office and may be spread across a longer delivery time frame.

We recommend selecting a format that supports the continued focus on the program content.

For example:

  • A retreat-style 5 day event

  • In-person weekly or fortnightly workshop delivery

  • A blended delivery of online and in-person days across your preferred time frame

Your advisor will work with you to determine the format best suited to the members of your family office.

What's Covered

Day 1: Introduction to Family Office
Welcome and overview.

Cornelius Vanderbilt said that anybody can make money, but it requires very special people to hold onto it. At Executive Choice we believe that you, as individuals, need to understand the world you are living in and the world that is emerging, and understand yourselves enough to define your values, before you can define the values of the family. This is the key to holding onto the family legacy.

Understanding the family office.

All families are different. They vary in many ways including demographics, beliefs, and cultures. Working together across these variables produces many hurdles that require careful consideration before defining exactly what you want your family office to be.

Introduction to the rules of the game.

Our lives are governed by many rules which have three origins, the spiritual, the objective, and the subjective. While spiritual rules are a function of belief, objective rules are a function of science, and subjective rules are a function of intuition or art. If a scientific rule is broken through objective experiments it is deemed broken. However, subjective rules are strengthened by their exceptions.

Day 2: The World in Which We Live

Political & economic systems.

As technology grows our lives are increasingly controlled by the impositions of both politics and economics. To survive in the world requires a knowledge of how those systems work.

Our changing culture.

Culture is the ideas, customs and social behaviour that define our lives. Culture is what ties us together and gives our lives meaning. Our culture has changed rapidly over the last century. Getting a handle on the changes is key to dealing with many of the growing problems we encounter.

The financial system.

Changes in technology, law and expectations have driven the finance industry from 2% of GDP to 14% in the last 70 years. A system that was only relevant for the top 1% of the population has become a need to know for all. An observation not reflected by the education system.

Day 3: Understanding Ourselves
Personal values and goals.

Over 99% of goals are never achieved. Your goals need to be based on your deep felt values to give them a chance of success.

Family office values and goals.

Forming values with a group of individuals of different values has got to be one of life’s hardest tasks. In a relationship sometimes you need to subordinate your values, something understood by all parents, growing from being an “I” to a “We” is required.

Day 4: Family Office Roles and Skills

All successful entities require a balance of skills. If one skill overalls the others the entity falls apart.

Entrepreneurial.

All entities need dreamers, people that have a vision.

Administrative.

The world today is full of regulations and the need for detail. This requires particular skills.

Technical.

Whatever the endeavour, someone needs to know how to do it. If you do not have the technical skills then the probability of fraud, corruption and under-performance is enhanced.

Day 5: Personal Growth & Conclusion
Life plans.

There are now 5 major financial goals in life: buying a house; the first three years of parenting; educating your children; providing for your retirement; and providing for your aged care.

These have to be fitted into the five stages of life. Childhood, adolescence, growth/accumulation, consolidation, downsizing. Achievement of these targets will require a solid plan.

Balancing lifestyle, work and financial security.

We are all different people with different values. Mapping the right course for you is the task at hand.

Conclusion, key takeaways & homework.
